Aberrant Birds Unique Exhibition 2016 in Latvian Museum of Natural History

Unique Exhibits of Latvian Museum of Natural History stamps series is supplemented by a stamp with the image of Aberrant Birds in 2016. This new stamp was issued by Latvijas Pasts (Latvian Post).

On the 19th of February, 2016 the Latvian Museum of Natural History held the ceremony devoted to presentation of the new stamp.

A museum representative had shown visitors the specimen with the picture of the aberrant black grouse Tetrao tetrix (known as blackgame as well). Girts Griva, an experienced artist, became a designer of the stamp as well as the cover.

This stamp became the second in collection Unique Exhibits of Latvian Museum of Natural History. The first one of the series was released in 2015. It was devoted to the placoderm fish, which is an exceptional rare specimen of the museum paleontology collection.

Abnormal Birds, the Unique Showpieces

Theodore Lorenz, taxidermist and ornithologist from Germany, decided to visit Moscow and St. Petersburg birds markets in the 19th century. Inspired by the Galliformes birds, which were brought mostly from Siberia by hunters, he made unusual collections of wild hybrid and aberrant gallinaceous birds.

Tetrao tetrix appeared among 169 specimens of the Latvian Natural History Museum collection.

It's difficult to gather the collection of Abnormal Birds as they are extremely rare. That is why just Russian State Darwin Museum and German Museum of Natural History situated in Bonn have this type of collections.

During the last twenty years no one abnormal bird of the order Galliformes was noticed in Latvia.
